Nubians in New Halfa

Nubians who imigrated from Wadi Halfa to Khashim Elgirba in Butana plain due to inundation of their home land , when the high dam was constructed in Eygpt . Those people live in about 25 villages constructed by the Eygption government fund in compensation for their flooded homes . The houses were built by using cements and concerte blocks to cope with the climate dominant in this area . A new city was constructed in the centre , so villages scattered arround the city in a circular manner , the distance between a village and the other is about 5 kms . Still Nubians in New Halfa stick to their mother language which is nubiin , they were very civilized people in every walks of life . will be continued later ...................

Wedding Traditions In Nubia

Wedding Traditions In Nubia

The preparations for wedding begun at henna day , the bridegroom had to undergo a henna ceremony , in this day a sheep or two were slaughtered according to guests numbers .

The henna ceremony begun after the sun set or in the after -noon , the bridegroom lay in a bed in which they put a straw mat decorated with different colors called in our local language (ghajary) . The female relatives of the bridegroom rubbed oil into the soles of his feet and palms and fingers then covered them with a paste of henna mixed with water .

The bridegroom unmarried friends then colored their fingers with rest of the paste , thus participating in the bridegroom,s happiness .

In the past the dowry of the son is in the form of land and date palms which publicly announced by the parents , nowadays this tradition in our home (country ) became out of date and dowry of the son is only 50 Sudanese pounds .

Women do the (nuqta ) and this a collection of money and goods takes place to help the bridegroom,s mother cover the expenses , all these donations entered into a book .

At night of the henna day the musicians play drums , now more sophisticated instuments were used for traditional dances (Nubian dance) in which two rows of men and women face each other and move rhythmically towards each other .

Women standing in the big circle surrounding the dancers break out in a high – pitched warbling sounds to accompany the dance.

On brides house there is no dancing on that evening , here a sheep is slaughtered and the bride too undergo the henna ceremony .

Before some days from wedding , the bridegroom send new dresses , costumes and some food stuff which is called in arabic (shaila ) .

In the moring of the wedding day a calf is slaughtered , also two sheeps or more were slaughtered according to guests numbers , accompanied with shrill – trills of the women .

All guests took part in the big feast that served in a big tent ( sewan ) , pitched near the house and after the serving of feast is completed , the marriage agreement concluded in accordance to Islamic law .

In the past and during serving the feast many of the guests went to bridegroom,s house to take him to his bride . On arrival at the entrance he was given a bowl of sweetened milk from which the bridegroom had to drink seven times , the rest was drunk by his friends toasting his health . Only the bridegroom allowed to see his bride for a few seconds , several women accompanied him to his bride room and allowed him to touch her forehead (in local nubin= gossa gabir ).

When he retuned back radiant with happiness, all congratulated him .

At night , during the party , the bridegroom and his bride sat on a small raised platform under the tent roof to receive the congratulations of the guests , celelbrations goes till dawn , and when the sun rises the couple leave to their honey moon .

Tobaco

Produced in different countries , but did you believe that tobaco was cultivated in Wadi Halfa (in belly of rock) , why ? because the available lands were limited and adjusant to nile banks only . Authority at that time (colonization time ) issued a desicion for those people who were resident in that area to produce tobaco and forbid it in other places , why ? because arable lands in belly of rock limited and characterized by rocky lands .
Two types of tobaco were grown , smoking tobaco during winter peroid when nile recedes and planted in silt lands at the banks of the nile , while the other type which is a sort of snuffing tobaco planted during summer months by water wheels . In this area tobaco considered as the main cash crop . (All this existed before Nubian exodus from their home land to eastern SUDAN .

Who are Nubians

Nubians are those people who live in the far north of Sudan , it comprises two areas ( Dongola and Halfa ). Their language differ a bit from each other, but they have the same culture and traditions . They were light dark green in color , they were a haematic race , they spoke nubin in Halfa area and ushkir in Dongola . Their main career or job is cultivating land , they were farmers . In the past they used water wheels to pumps water to irrigate their fields (called in arabic : sakia ) , now they depend on more sophisticated pumps that draw water by means of electericity or gasoline .They specialized in producing winter crops such as wheat ,ficia faba ,chickpeas, and so many pulses and vegetables.
The far north of nubian area inundated by high dam waters which constructed in Eygpt (an area about 150km now under water) , so the government of Sudan transfered people who live in this area to a place called Khashim Algirba in eastern Sudan ( Kassala Province )in 1964-65 . And to settle those imigrated people the government of Sudan estatblished an agric. project at the western banks of Atbra river in Butana plain , also to resettle the nomadic indigenous peole of Butana .
Some people refused to migrate to this new area and face harsh times, their houses demolished by the flood and they lost all their arable lands , so they depend in their livelihood on compensation that they get due to their lost houses , grooves and lands and on money that sent by their kins from abroad .
Those who migrated to Khashim Algirba encountered by a different environment that characterized by high rains during rainy season ( May - Sept. ) , those people do not used to high rains . The government allocated about 15 feddans (acres ) for each family to grow cotton , peanuts and wheat , also they recieved free-hold lands in compensation for their lost lands . In coming posts i will write more .

Wadi Halfa

My beloved country ( home ) , one of the oldest cities in Sudan . It extends from the southern borders of Eygpt to a place called Abu Fatima at the far south . it constitute Halfa, sikout and Mahas . After construction of high dam in Eygpt and when the old city flooded by dam waters they moved to a higher place about 20km to rebuild a new city. Wadi Halfa is the paradise of all nubians , nowadays construction and developments were running including new roads and institutions so , it became an attractive and more nubians have intentions to go back and live there .
